Brief History:

Esso is the main brand used by Exxon Corp (formerly Standard Oil Company of New Jersey) in Europe, and has been a prolific issuer of road maps. As its history is relatively well documented, this web site will concentrate on the maps themselves. There are over 200 Esso maps shown here, with the approximate number of images shown in brackets (parenthesis), so they have been split into the following pages:

Esso Standard maps from 1920-51 (15)
Esso maps from 1952-62 (19)
Esso maps from 1963-74 (11)
Esso maps since 1975 (16)
Scenic maps from the 1950s: Scandinavia (21)
Scenic maps from the 1950s: Benelux & Switzerland (13)
Country overview: Esso maps from Britain (20)
More scenic 1950s Esso maps from Britain (18)
1960s Esso guides to London and Irish Airports (9)
Country overview: Esso maps from Germany (48)
Country overview: Esso maps from Italy (15)
Esso Cruising Guides & Waterways maps (12)
Other publications from the Esso Touring Service (20)
Pratt's road atlases from the British Isles, 1905-29 (9)

1971 Esso (Humble Oil) map of Western Europe
Of Europe, but not from Europe. A 1971 General Drafting map from the US Esso Touring Service.

Navigation: Following the next page link will take you through the eleven pages listed above in order. Although there are many images, most have been kept to as small a size as possible, so that the total size of all the images is still under 2Mb. The images shown are only a cross section of Esso maps available.

Special thanks to Stan DeOrsey for scanning some of his maps for these pages, and also for providing the detailed history of the Esso Touring Service.
